Sources of Light
"SOURCES OF LIGHT IS MORE THAN JUST A PORTRAIT SERIES. IT IS A CELEBRATION OF OUR PERSONAL SOURCES OF LIGHT, POSITIVITY AND ENERGY. A CELEBRATION OF OUR UNIQUE SELVES AND A CELEBRATION OF OUR LOVED ONES, LIGHTING THE WAY AND PULLING US OUT OF THE DARKNESS ALWAYS."
The end of 2016 was much more than just sub-zero temperatures and unusually heavy snow days. On hot cider evenings filled with parkade adventures, back-alley discoveries, warm smiles and full hearts, we had the immense pleasure of photographing some amazing people in our community and their personal interpretations of light through a collection of 30+ portraits.
Launching "Sources of Light", we set out on a week-long journey of reflection - reflecting on the trials and tribulations of our past year with not only our close friends, but also with kind strangers on Christmas Day. There's something so incredibly powerful about staring into a light or a flame - something that invokes so much emotion that we tend to brush aside. With every face that lit up at the light of every sparkler, we felt an ever-growing sense of gratitude - gratitude for the beautiful and unconditionally supportive human beings that surround us, and gratitude for the fact that, despite the ups and downs we've individually faced this year, we've all made it here and we are still able to bring smiles to each other's faces.
Our main goal for this project was to help people connect with elements or memories of people, things, encounters or experiences over the past year that have helped them get to where they are today. The lights were only a simple representation of that.
And while our initial hope was to create a special experience for the participants, we soon realized the project was an equally transformative one for us as photographers. "Sources of Light" stretched our creative capacities, and with 15,000 digital files, the "ooh's and ah's" following brilliant bursts of light, a jam-packed week of exciting, yet focused late-night photoshoots under the night sky, and days of editing later, we're so delighted to be sharing this experience with you. We should mention that this project really wouldn't have been possible without the enthusiasm and support of friends, participants and collaborators throughout the process. A special mention goes out to our friend and talented baker, Connie of Chocolate & Connie, who jumped in to add her special sweetness to our campaign by supplying us with her signature Matcha White Chocolate Cookies to share with our participants and tickle our tastebuds.
If you do find a moment to look through "Sources of Light", we hope it makes you smile. If you do, we simply ask that you pass that light on to someone else in your life whether that may be a stranger, a lover or a friend.
